Term Four Inquiry

For social studies this term, we have had to learn a traditional māori skill that we could pass on to others. My skill was to weave a flax flower, i used two types of flax which contained red and green flax. I learnt that you cut the outside leaves of the bush, you cut the leaves on an angle. My big question was why was weaving such a big thing in māori culture, my response was it was a cheep resources that you can nearly do anything with. Weaving a flax flower was a difficult task. My expert that taught me was my mum, see has made hepes.

HOW TO MAKE A FLAX FLOWER.
You will need:

  • One strip of flax
  • Scissors
  • Yourself
Fold the flax, split it in half. Twist two to three times to make the the bude, hold tightly. Rap the flax and then twist outwards, do this multiple times still hold tightly. With the leftover flax spit with your fingernail and tie around bottom of flower. You will now have a flax flower.
